Meet the team

Dr James Hamilton MBBS FRCR DipSEM

Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist | Course Lead

James is a consultant in musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology who works within Yorkshire Sports Medicine Clinic and the York and Scarborough teaching hospitals. James graduated from Hull York Medical School training in Medicine in 2014 and went on to complete his Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the University of South Wales.

Alongside his MSK Radiology work, James is also a visiting Lecturer in Radiology for the MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the University of Leeds as well as the Senior Clinical Lecturer and Radiology Lead at Hull York Medical School.

James has previously worked in professional football as a club doctor for Gateshead and Harrogate and with the professional squash association. It is extremely rare to have a radiologist who has also worked clinically in sport. This rare blend of MSK Radiology and sports medicine brings a high level of expertise and knowledge to YSM Academy.


Professor Dr Dane Vishnubala MBBS FRCGP PGCME MSc SEM DipSEM (UK) PGCert MSKUS FFSEM SFHEA PhD

Consultant Physician Sport and Exercise Medicine | Tutor

Dane is a Consultant Physician in Sport and Exercise Medicine. Dane has worked as a Strength and Conditioning coach and personal trainer before qualifying in Medicine from Hull York Medical School and then training as a GP in York. He then completed further specialist training in Sports and Exercise Medicine. Dane has completed his MSc in SEM from the University Nottingham, PGCME with merit (Medical Education) from Cardiff University and his Musculoskeletal Ultrasound training with merit in London.

Dane has held academic medical education positions in the NHS and teaches for Hull York Medical School, Leeds Beckett University and wrote the curriculum for the Leeds University MSc in SEM for which he is the clinical lead. He is currently the training programme director for NHS specialist training in Sport and Exercise Medicine for Yorkshire and Humber and looks after doctors training to become consultants. Dane regularly teaches GPs and other doctors around musculoskeletal medicine.

Dane also works as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for England Basketball, club doctor for York City Knights RL and York City FC and a consultant for the FA. Dane has also worked at the FINA European Swimming Championships, FIBA Eurobasket and supported the England Basketball team during Commonwealth 2018 (Gold Coast). He currently works as a consultant for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) alongside his work at Yorkshire Sports Medicine Clinic.


Dr Craig Zalecki BSc (Hons) MBBS MRCGP FFSEM Dip SEM PGCert MSK US

Consultant Physician in Sport, Exercise, and Musculoskeletal Medicine | Tutor

Dr Zalecki specialises in diagnosing and managing conditions and injuries affecting bones, joints, muscles, and tendons without the need for surgery. He provides expert care to patients of all activity levels and lifestyles, from those with general musculoskeletal concerns to professional athletes and recreationally active individuals seeking to recover from injuries and enhance their performance.

A Yorkshire native, Dr Zalecki attended Tadcaster Grammar School before pursuing higher education at some of the world's leading institutions. He earned a BSc in Human Biology from King’s College London and completed his medical degree at University College London.

After qualifying, Dr Zalecki served as a doctor in the Royal Army Medical Corps and undertook General Practitioner training in the prestigious Oxford Deanery. He later returned to Yorkshire to complete specialist training in Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Dr Zalecki has held several high-profile roles in elite sports medicine, including serving as the team doctor for the GB Basketball Senior Women’s Team and working with GB Boxing at the English Institute of Sport, as well as Leeds Rhinos Academy.

Currently, Dr Zalecki is a Consultant for the Ministry of Defence, working with military personnel and infantry recruits at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire. He also serves as a Senior Clinical Tutor at the University of Leeds, teaching postgraduate students in Sports and Exercise Medicine and musculoskeletal medicine.


Dr Jon Power MBChB MRCGP MSc SEM DipSEM (UK & I) FFSEM

Consultant Physician Sport and Exercise Medicine | Tutor

Jon is a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine who graduated from the University of Leeds in 2001 and gained his Masters in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) from the University of Nottingham, one of the oldest SEM MSc Institutions in the country. Jon has completed his Specialist Training in Sport and Exercise Medicine and scored the highest national score in the post graduate exams at the time and was awarded the Macleod Medal.

As an experienced physician, Jon is an educational supervisor to doctors undertaking specialist training in Sport and Exercise Medicine and Director of Placement for the University of Leeds MSc in SEM. Jon has worked with a range of organisations including specialist NHS musculoskeletal clinics, England Rugby, Team GB (London 2012), Football Association and was the former head of medical services for Leeds rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie. Most recently Jon has been appointed the role of Club Doctor for Liverpool Football Club.


Sarah Rayner BSc PGCert MSKUS MCSP

Senior Physiotherapist and MSK Sonographer | Tutor

Sarah qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 1998 from the University of Liverpool. She continued to develop her expertise working at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital till 2005 before returning back 'home' to Yorkshire. Sarah has progressed through NHS seniority working in a range of departments and currently works as a Senior Orthopaedic Practitioner at York Teaching Hospital.

She has completed further training in musculoskeletal ultrasound and was awarded the Siemans' prize for the best performance in her cohort. Sarah works as an MSK Sonographer within Yorkshire Sports Medicine Clinic, providing US Scans and US guided injections and shares her knowledge and expertise here at YSM Academy as an educator and course lead.

Sarah also has over 20 years of high level experience in a range of settings, including elite sport experience working as a physiotherapist for England Hockey for a number of years.


Mr Simon Boyle MBBS MRCS (Eng&Ed) MSc FRCS(Tr&Orth)

Simon graduated in Medicine from the University of Leeds in 1997 and completed his surgical training in Yorkshire and Australia. In 2009, he was privileged to be selected to spend a year undertaking a shoulder surgery fellowship with Dr Laurent Lafosse in the worlds leading shoulder arthroscopy unit in Annecy, France. This gave him a unique experience in pioneering shoulder surgery techniques for pathologies including rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability (dislocations), sports injuries, impingement pain and shoulder stiffness (frozen shoulder and arthritis). Whilst in France, Simon became the first UK surgeon to perform the complex arthroscopic Latarjet shoulder stabilisation procedure.

On his return to the UK, Simon spent a further year in the prestigious Wrightington Upper Limb Unit working with Professor Len Funk, Professor Ian Trail and Mr John Haines. Here he further refined his clinical knowledge and surgical skills. Simon has been a Consultant in Shoulder and Elbow surgery since 2010.

As a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with decades of experience practicing from York Teaching Hospital, the academy is lucky to have his extensive expertise to hand. Simon is heavily involved in reviewing our educational pathways and processes and in training our team.
